Clive’s love for numbers prompted him to pursue a Banking and Finance degree at the University of London after graduating from Temasek Polytechnic with an engineering diploma. Thereafter, he took up several contract positions at local and foreign banks to gain work experience. He eventually chose UOB to pursue his long-term career due to the plethora of opportunities that the bank offers. “UOB nurtures and trains you. Upon joining UOB, personal bankers undergo intensive training for two months,” says Clive.

After doing policy work in the civil service sector for three years, the bubbly Patricia decided to make a career switch by joining UOB. She shares, “I chose personal banking as a career because I wanted to experience something different and dynamic!”

As Personal Bankers, Clive and Patricia are actively involved in understanding customers’ financial needs. In doing so, they are then be able to provide customers with relevant information, advice and solutions. Clive and Patricia tap on a combination of UOB’s diverse client base, tele-consulting and referrals to continuously build relationships with new and existing customers. They are expected to practise diligence and integrity to ensure proper advisory procedures and meticulous documentation in compliance with UOB’s internal policies, business processes and regulatory requirements.

The ability to listen is a quintessential trait for their job. “It is only when we listen to our clients’ needs are we then able to identify and recommend the most suitable products,” says Clive. He adds that a willingness to learn is also important as the economy and industry are ever-changing. Besides keeping abreast of industry regulations and trends, Clive also learns a lot from his seniors and bosses.

Rejection is not uncommon in this role. Hence, Personal Bankers should possess resilience and remember their core purpose, which is to help clients plan for their future and safeguard their wealth. Patricia also highlights the importance of empathy. “We deal with clients’ hard-earned savings, so we must help them to manage and grow their wealth in the best possible way,” says Patricia.

UOB adopts a family-oriented and open environment, one in which ideas and opinions are embraced. “We have plenty of group outings, incentive trips and awards to give staff recognition. She injects, “Our bosses are really open-minded, approachable and generous!”
